Not only was he the first President of the United States and the Father of our country, but George Washington started the 'merican made and buy local movements. On this date in 1789, Washington wrote: "We have already been too long subject to British prejudices. I use no porter or cheese in my family, but such as is made in America; both these articles may now be purchased of an excellent quality."

Oregon Homebrew Freedom Day   March 28
Roseburg Homebrew Rendezvous
Because of the signing into law of SB 444 in 2011, Oregonians today have
the freedom to compete in county and state homebrew contests, and to
attend such events as the Roseburg Homebrew Rendezvous.
Signing SB 444

Oregonians have been free to make homebrew since 1979, but in 2011 Gov. John Kitzhaber signed into law SB 444, allowing Oregonians to legally share homebrew beer and wine outside of their homes.

As of 3.28.11, Oregon SB 444 legalizes:
  • Transportation of homebrew and sweet wort
  • Homebrew and ingredients trading
  • Beer and wine competitions
  • Homebrew club dues
  • Homebrew contest prize money
  • Donations to non-profits

which day, exactly, is the beer free?

And all our yesterdays have lighted fools

Yeast mating ritual--Avert your
eyes if easily offended!
Yeast Mating Ritual
In 2013 Oregon becomes the first state in the Union to designate an official microbe. House Concurrent Resolution 12 declares that “Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a microorganism classified in the kingdom Fungi, has a long history of assisting in human gastronomic, cultural and scientific endeavors.” and that it “has inspired a thriving brewing culture in this state, making Oregon an internationally recognized hub of craft brewing.”
“God made yeast, as well as dough, and loves fermentation just as dearly as he loves vegetation.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Life cycle of Saccharomyces cerevisiae: eat, screw, fart, sleep.
When magnified a whole bunch of times, as pictured here, it is revealed, most shockingly, that this lascivious little horndog and billions of his itty bitty buddies do their dirty deeds with a big ol' smile after being pitched into the brew kettle.

King of the Coolerator Day   June 11

Carl von LInde, 19th century German engineer, inventor, and Father of the "Cold One," developed a reliable system of refrigeration, allowing beer to be moved out of archaic ice houses into modern coolerators.

Brewpub Day  July 13
Oregon Gov. Vic Atiyeh signs the "Brewpub Bill" into law in 1985, which allows beer to be sold, but more importantly, also consumed at the breweries where it is made. The McMenamins Hillsdale Brewery & Public House becomes Oregon's first post-Prohibiition brewpub, leading the way today for the state to have the most breweries per capita in the U.S.

National Drink Beer Day   Sept. 28
We kid you not--a declaration day to...wait for it...drink beer! Not that there's anything wrong with the other 364, and that a special day dedicated to drinking your favorite fermented beverage is needed as an excuse to, you know, drink your favorite fermented beverage, but who are we to argue with a such a noble national declaration day of celebration. True, there are so many beers and oh so few brain cells, but it's not rocket science, it's beer for crying out loud, so use the flimsiest of excuses, such as, "Hey, it's National Drink Beer Day today!" and drink beer today.
